Kerri’s group all work together at a hospital in Roanoke, VA. A couple of them have been fishing off-shore before and for those of them that have not; actually for all of them ------ what a fabulous experience. It was beautiful weather, sunshine, nice seas and a light breeze to keep the summer heat at bay.
We set out with a couple other boats in the fleet looking for Tuna and Billfish. There was all sorts of wildlife with Porphoises, Pilot Whales, Birds and a couple of Sunfish ------ all that you want for Tuna. The group got a couple of practice runs with bites from and Banita (bait-fish) and Yellow-fin Tuna………..little did they know what was coming!!!! One of the boats got hit by the Big Eye’s and not too long after that we got hit by the Big Eye Tuna’s.
We saw one boil on the baits, then another, then another………….they hit eight baits including both teasers, three lines came tight with Big Eye’s on, two of which were hooked up solidly. There was one Big Eye that wanted the teaser ------ he would not give it up but kept coming up and hitting it………it was great to watch. Capt. Dave put a bait two feet behind the teaser but that was all he wanted not a substitute!! It did not take that long to get the Big Eye’s to the boat for their size but I know that the anglers and rest of the group thought it took forever. The whole group did a fabulous job getting the fish to the back of the boat, lots of encouragement, water, moving around from one side of the boat to the other. Both tuna’s had to be brought in through the Tuna door since they were that big. We brought a 229lb & 168lb Big Eye to the dock and a happy group. The rest of the fleet had a good day with Big Eye’s and a good catch of Mahi-Mahi South of us.
